We remain good friends with our previous tenants a We remain good friends with our previous tenants and receive questions like this one. The tenancy agreement you signed is likely a joint tenancy. This means that one person's act means for all. If the others wants to stay on, you may be permitted to 'swap' but on the condition that you need to find someone and/or pay the rent until the new person can be found. Or you may not be released from the contract at all. Be mindful of the notice period you need to give and speak with your landlord/agent urgently. The key is to get yourself off the contract permanently. Leaving the country? Your rent is still due and you could be chased via a debt collector or legal action.
